The SOS Hermann Gmeiner School was established in 1987 to provide education for children from the SOS Children’s Village-Tema and children of the Tema Municipality and its environs.
SOS HGS is established to offer children and adolescents a good education with continuous schooling. The school’s syllabuses are based on the Ghana Education Service Curriculum for Basic Education schools in Ghana with a few modifications to suit our standards. Our ultimate mission is to develop our students to be assertive, respectful, tolerant hardworking and disciplined in order to be responsible citizens.
SOS-HGS is non –residential and has excellent modern facilities, including an art studio, a library, and language, music, computer and vocational skills laboratories. It is located in community 6, in the port city of Tema, Ghana.
Most teachers in the school are Ghanaian Graduate teachers with several years of teaching experience. The school can also boast of very hardworking and dedicated supporting staff. There are currently 613 students enrolled.
We are very proud of our academic excellence and therefore we expect students who attend our school to maintain a high academic performance and meet our targets for progress through hard work.
At SOS HGS, we believe that students are creative, thoughtful, trustworthy and capable of making important decisions, and are accountable and responsible for their own actions. We therefore do not make punitive measures a way of maintaining discipline but rather discussions and appeals to our correct sense of judgment. However, there are offences which are unacceptable and improper and therefore merit certain sanctions. These are enshrined in the school’s code of discipline and the student’s handbook.
The school follows the Ghana Education Service Curriculum for Basic Schools in Ghana. Students write the BECE (Basic Education Certificate of Examination) after completing a nine year stay in the school.
Our teaching methodologies are learner centred with emphasis on the use of ICT. All subjects are compulsory.

English Language, French Language, Ghanaian Language (Asante Twi), Mathematics, Integrated Science, Basic Design and Technology (Pre-Vocational Skills, Pre-Technical Skills, Creative Arts: Music and Dance, Fine art), Natural Science, Citizenship Education, Social Studies, P.E. and ICT.
Students are tested in all the above subjects and are expected to make a minimum score of 70% pass mark and 80 %.-100% distinction. The school also uses the A-F grade ranking alongside the 1-9 grade ranking with A & 1 being the highest.

There is an SOS clinic in the SOS Children’s Village with experienced medical staff on site. Students are sent to the Tema General hospital when the need arises. There is also a sick bay in the school.
