The SOS Hermann Gmeiner Vocation Training Center (HGVTC) situated in Community 6 within the boundaries of SOS Children’s Village in Tema, is one of many project of the SOS Children’s Villages. The Centre was setup to provide first-class vocational education for youth from the SOS Children’s Villages Ghana and from the surrounding community. The school has been established to provide young school leavers with formal vocational training in a variety of trades. The courses are designed with the realities of the labour market in mind and have been designed to instill a sense of creativity, independence and social responsibility in the trainees.

The HGVTC is an accredited school recognized by the Ghana Education Service (GES). Upon completion of their education, students are given a recognized Diploma/School Certificate.  Students also write external examinations with the National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), NACVET & GES.

The School has a collection of well trained graduate teachers with both excellent theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
The HGVTC currently has about 200 students, both male and female (mixed schools).  The Centre runs three programs which last for a period of three years.

The catering department makes Catering Studies a joy. With courses such as Food Service, Food Craft and Industrial relations, students of HGVTC are adequately prepared to offer any kind of catering services. The department has been equipped to undertake large scale Catering Services. Luncheon services both local and continental are also available. The Vocational school has a canteen and a modern Kitchen where students have their practical sessions.

The Dressmaking department trains students to be professional dressmakers. Over the years the school has been noted for producing students who graduate with confidence and finesse. Subjects taught include Millinery (Hat making) and Fashion Designing. This department has been revamped with industrial machines for large scale production. A production unit (Mofrado) has been established to produce dresses including uniform for sale.

The secretarial department prepares students adequately to take up any secretarial task. In this fast growing economy students need to be well trained to meet the demands of every corporate executive. The curricula and the courses have been developed to meet the needs of every student.
The department has therefore been equipped with excellent facilities that will enable the students improve on their skills. Courses offered include Business Communication, Accounting, Computer Studies, French and Business Law. Students are also trained in Basic Graphics to enable them produce invitation cards, business cards and letterheads. Since 2005 the HGVTC has been given the accreditation to prepare students for the Diploma in Business Studies.

The department has very good facilities that include a computer center, fax machines etc.  Upon completion of their courses, the students are attached to institutions to enable them have more practical experience.
