There were excitements at the Hermann Gmeiner International College as guests were treated to the best of food, wine and music during the SOS Dinner dance. The dinner dance was held to climax this year Hermann Gmeiner week celebrations.
The dinner dance held on the 7th July, 2007, was organized to raise funds to build two medical laboratories in the SOS Children’s Villages in Tema and Asiakwa.
In his welcome address, the National Director of SOS Children’s Villages Ghana Mr. Kojo Mattah, expressed delight at the presence of the large number of guests and explained the importance of the events.
“He said we wish to take this opportunity to share with our friends and donors joy of being a member of SOS family” he pointed out. He explained that the event was also being used to celebrate the achievements of SOS as well as to celebrate the 50 years of nationhood. He called on staff to remain steadfast in their commitment to the organization an urged them to continue to work as a team.
In short but insightful address by the former Black star player, Mr. Tony Baffoe, he urged participants of the event to remain committed to the cause of needy children. He emphasized that “the best thing we can do as adult is to invest in our children especially needy children”. He said, “There is no excuse for us not to support these children. We must all give the little we can to support a worthy cause”. He affirmed his readiness to support SOS children’s Villages and called other to do likewise.
The General Manager of Ashfoam Mr. George Massih reiterated the need for individuals’ corporate bodies to support SOS in its quest to improve the lives of needy children. He said Ashfoam had decided to donate 40 children’s mattresses and 10 double mattresses for the Asiakwa SOS villages.
Mr. William Apem Darko, the New Director General of Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) Nill Teiko Evans Anfom, President of Ghana Institute of Architects also gave inspiring messages at the event.
The program was interspersed with cultural dances, and live music. Borax, a Hip life musician who is supporting SOS in a fundraising drive with his song Tene WO NSA trilled the audience with rich repertoire of some of his old and new music. The guests were also entertained by Teddy’s Combo, The Royal dancers from SOS Children’s Villages Tema, Kakaamontobi and General Kokato.
The dinner dance together with a sponsored walk with featured prof. Azumah Nelson, Borax and other Corporate heads is expected to raise about 36,000 dollars to raise funds to build an equip two medical laboratories in the SOS Villages in Tema and Asiakwa.
The Asiakwa lab which is expected to be the first to be built will also serve members of the surrounding community. The MCs for the night were Gideon Aryeequaye of TV3 fame and Gina Fiagbenu Head of the Communications and Marketing of SOS Children’s Villages Ghana.
